Genealogy of Christoffel Meijer (±1721 - 1798)

II-a Harmen (Herman) Meijer, born on 16 January 1762 in de Purmer?, baptized (Reformed), carpenter; chief-workman (on the Emperor’s naval dockyard in Medemblik) (1811-1812), died on 14 May 1812 (scan) in Medemblik () at the age of 50, son of Christoffel Meijer (see I) and Antje Sibelts Keijser.
He publishes the bans on 4 February 1786 in Hoorn () and gets married in church on 19 February 1786 in Hoorn () at the age of 24 to the 22-year old Cornelia Ment, born on 23 August 1763 in Hoorn (), baptized (Reformed) on 18 September 1763 in Hoorn (), cleaning lady (1817-1818), died on 25 January 1827 (scan) in Medemblik () at the age of 63, daughter of Cornelis Ment and Henrikjen Strijkers.

Children of Herman and Cornelia:

1. Cornelis Meijer, born on 8 March 1788 in Hoorn () (see III-a).
2. Hendrikje Meijer, baptized (Reformed) on 3 July 1789 in Hoorn (), buried on 9 June 1790 in Hoorn () (at least 11 months old) (in the Groote Kerk, north side 170; fee f 4,-).
3. Pieter Meijer, born on 1 January 1791 in Hoorn () (see III-b).
4. Joanna Susanna (Antje) Meijer, baptized on 12 June 1792 in Hoorn () (see III-c).
5. Jacob Meijer, born on 10 October 1794 in Hoorn () (see III-d).

Facts and remarks (chronological):

The grave in which Hendrikje Meijer is buried, was bought on 20 November 1666 by Cornelis Ment, the great-grandfather of Cornelia.
The marriage service of Cornelis Ment and Hendrikje Strijkers is performed on the same day their daughter Cornelia is baptized. Within one month after that, on 13 October 1763, Cornelis dies at the age of 27.
Until now, proof of the baptism of Harmen could not be found, nor a reference to a place of birth. The presented birth date is found in the Registre Civique of the district of Hoorn from 1811, in which only one Harmen is listed, who is living in Medemblik. The name Herman, as he is often called, cannot be found in this register at all. Though his birth date does not match with the age at the time of his death (49, according to his death certificate), we can assume that this is the Harmen Meijer we are looking for. On investigation it has been shown that the age, mentioned on certificates of the Registry Office, is not always correct.
The death certificate of Harmen shows, among others, "son of Stoffel Meijer and Johanna Wiggerts, at the time spouses, both deceased in Monnikendam". So the search for Harmen’s parents brings us to Monnickendam. Unfortunately, multiple persons with the name Christoffel Meijer are found there! However, there is only one Christoffel Meijer who could potentially be Harmen’s father and that is the one who is getting married in 1762 to Antje. They become five children (Wolmertje, Christiaan, Pieter, Christiaan and Christoffel), all being baptized in Monnickendam. No Harmen here, so we still do not know if this Christoffel is the right one. After Antje’s death, this Christoffel remarries to Jaapje Veerdig. Subsequently, they make their will in which they appoint the children of Christoffel "begot in previous marriage" as their heirs: Harmen, Wolmoet, Christiaan and Pieter! After the death of Christoffel another notarial deed is drawn up. As heirs are stated: Harmen "living in Hoorn", Christiaan and Pieter. This seems to be enough proof to declare Christoffel and Harmen father and son! But how about his mother? There is no record at all about a Johanna Wiggerts in Monnickendam. But when Harmen’s son Cornelis marries for the third time, and at the first marriage of Harmen’s daughter Joanna Susanna both grandmothers are mentioned (because the parents were already deceased): "Antje Sijbrands Keizer also known as Johanna Wiggertsz, and Hendrikje Dirks van Lengen also known as Hendrikje Strijkers".The marriage certificate of Joanna Susanna also states: "the bride as well as the 4 witnesses have declared under oath to know that both grandmothers carry both names but in fact are the same person". That may be the cause for finding no records at all of Johanna Wiggertsz. No hard evidence, however, for now we think Antje is Harmen’s mother.
Harmen and Cornelia are married in the Dutch Reformed Church of Hoorn by pastor Schaad.

II-b Wolmertje (Wolmoet) Meijer, born in Overleek (), baptized (Lutheran) on 10 January 1763 (scan) in Monnickendam (), died on 24 April 1795 in Monnickendam () (at least 32 years old), buried on 24 April 1795 in Monnickendam (), daughter of Christoffel Meijer (see I) and Antje Sibelts Keijser.

Facts and remarks (chronological):

Due to his weak health as an infant, Adam is baptized in the Purmer.
According to one of the documents presented at her marriage, Neeltje’s name changes officially to Neeltje Aartsz de Graaf when her father Hein Aartsz adopts the surname "de Graaf".
At the wedding ceremony between Jan Heit and Neeltje it appears that Neeltje is not able to write. Her mother (Immetje Klaas) is at that time financially aided by an almoner.

Facts and remarks (chronological):

The following survey is derived from the Criminal Records of the city Monnickendam:
< On 26 August 1799 a meeting of the court is being held where the field officer, all civil judges and the citizens Schoon and de Haas are present.
The field officer declares that yesterday morning a very perturbed Geertje Veen came to him, and told him that shortly before she was visited by the housewife of Christiaan Meijer (Sijtje Carsten Kemp) and by the daughter of the widow of Cornelis Groot. Both women argued with Geertje Veen and they heaped reproaches on her, after which Geertje Veen took a blunt hatchet, and, unintentionally, accidentally injured the housewife of Christiaan Meijer in the head. He continues that shortly after that both women visited him as well, telling him more or less the same story, only, they declared that Geertje Veen, picking up the blunt hatchet, said "I will hit you over the head" or something similar to that.
The field officer requests that the housewife of Christiaan Meijer tell her story before the court, and that the defendant Geertje Veen be interrogated.
Geertje Veen admits to having badly injured the housewife of Christiaan Meijer in the head after she was cursed and sworn at.
Subsequently, according to the legislation of the city of Monnickendam of 23 May 1644, the field officer demands that the defendant Geertje Veen, be sentenced by the court and be locked up in the "Dark Hole" for 2 months at her own expenses.
The court of justice, on behalf of the Batavian people, pronounces judgment on Geertje Veen and sentences her to be locked up in the Dark Hole for 8 days and to pay for the court costs. >
