The marriage between the cousins is a shotgun marriage; son Cornelis is born before the actual marriage takes place. Because Jan is a sailor, het is hardly at home. Margaretha falls in love with Hermen. They get 4 children, while Margaretha is still married to Jan, because she is unable to divorce from him while he is not in Holland. Though she finally marries Hermen in 1908, their 4 children have to keep the name Meijer.
